The growth of 3x3 basketball globally now offers the opportunity for players to not only organize pick-up games in the park, but to play in officially sanctioned 3x3 tournaments across the country.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) first introduced 3x3 basketball as a sanctioned sport at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Since then, 3x3 has grown internationally to include World Championships at the U18 and open (adult) divisions. 2011 saw the first 3x3 U18 World Championships in Rimini, Italy. A year later, the FIBA 3x3 World Championships for the open divisions debuted in Athens. Countries including China, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Russia and Spain have all played host to U18 World Championships or World Championships.
The 2017 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships will take place in Chengdu, China, from June 28-July 2, while the 2017 FIBA 3x3 World Championships will be held in Nantes, France, from June 17-21.
3x3 basketball is a sport that can be enjoyed by players of all levels in a competitive or skill-development setting. This fast-paced game encourages creative thinking and exposes players to all skills, positions and facets of the game.
While 3x3 is frequently enjoyed in a pick-up setting or informally as part of team practices, players can also compete in FIBA 3x3 endorsed events and play by official 3x3 rules. FIBA 3x3 tournaments are held year-round by event operators all over the United States. Search for upcoming 3x3 tournaments on the FIBA 3x3 Planet Events website.
Certain tournaments that meet USA Basketball requirements also serve as qualifier events for the USA Basketball 3x3 National Tournament. By participating in these tournaments, your team could win a bid to play in the USA 3x3 National Tournament held annually in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where the USA Basketball 3x3 World Championship teams are selected. Find a full list of confirmed qualifier events on the USA 3x3 National Tournament qualifier events page.
To participate in an official FIBA 3x3 tournament or USA 3x3 National Tournament qualifier, players must create and confirm a 3x3 player profile. Full details on how to create and confirm a 3x3 player profile can be found HERE.
Coaches, make your teams better and teach individual skill development to players by incorporating 3x3 into your practices. 3x3 games are an excellent way to teach fundamental skills to players of all ability levels.
By incorporating a 12-second shot clock, players are challenged to make quick decisions and work together to score. Players are exposed to all positions on the court while learning to pass, attack and move with and without the basketball. 3x3 games can take place in an informal setting or by following the official 3x3 rules of the game.
Player profiles earn individual ranking points which can be tracked against each other. By the end of the season, see which players break into the top 100 for all 3x3 players in the United States!
